Suburban Long Island is a bedroom community for many workers who commute daily to the business canyons of Manhattan, but the area also boasts many important home-grown businesses in tech, aerospace and science.

These days, when the median home sold for $391,000, it's tough for many working families to get their foot in the homebuying door on Long Island. During the last three months of 2008, only 25.5% of the homes sold were affordable to those earning median incomes.

Foreclosures have remained a minor problem with only about one out of every 100 households getting hit by foreclosure filings in 2008. That was almost unchanged from the year before
