"From the materials used to create it to the space and experience it offers the passengers, the Ciel represents a unique perspective on luxury but not the only one," Cadillac designer Dean said in a statement.

GM also unveiled the Cadillac ELR, a plug-in hybrid car based on the technology used for the Chevrolet Volt. Unlike the Ciel, the ELR will be for sale, GM said.

With cars like this, Dean said, GM designers want to show how Cadillac style can be applied in a range of ways.
