Pumping up the power
Pumping up the power

The new Porsche 911 will initially be available with a choice of two 6-cylinder engines.

The 911 Carrera, essentially the base model, will have a 350 horsepower 3.4-liter engine which is smaller than the 2011 model while delivering slightly more power

The more expensive Carrera S will have a 400 horsepower -- 15 more than the 2011 model -- 3.8-liter engine. So Porsche engineers were able to squeeze out more power without increasing the the engine's size.

All of this was done with subtle changes to things like valve timing, fuel injection and air intake design.

Product planning manager Schiltd calls the new engines "an evolution, not a major new technology."

But subtle changes like these will play a big role in keeping cars like the Porsche 911 meaningful even as fuel economy rules become stricter.
