Start college while in high school
Start college while in high school
Name: Nevate Bailey
Year: Senior
College: Sam Houston State University

Strategy: Nevate enrolled in a dual credit program with a local community college in her third year of high school and was able to enter college as a junior. She also applied to every scholarship she could find.

Savings: $24,000 for avoiding two years of college costs. Nevate's strong academics also helped her win $10,000 in scholarships to help pay for the next two years.

Advice: "Start thinking about ways to save way before senior year of high school," says Nevate's mother, Patrice Walters. Students whose high schools don't offer a dual-credit program can take community college classes during the summer or earn credits by scoring well on Advanced Placement tests.
