Techie design people are in short supply
Owner: Elie Khoury
Company: Woopra
Location: San Francisco

Woopra is a live web analytics service. We allow online businesses to track their website's visitors, analyze the data and then act on this information by creating personalized experiences for customers.

Like every other web-based company, we need a talented user interface designer, which requires skills in graphics and certain software. I have taken on this role myself since 2008, when I founded Woopra, but I would like to hire someone else so that I can focus on my role as CEO. This is also critical in scaling our growth, as we currently track 200,000 websites with the potential for many more.

Part of the reason there are so few qualified candidates is that there are virtually no user interface design majors or programs. Students either study graphic design or software development, but a good UI designer must have both design and technical skills -- something you rarely find in one person.

Also, the demand for UI designers is far greater than the supply. As a result, professionals in this field are able to make significant amounts of money freelancing part-time. Those who are employed full-time are being paid top dollar by large companies. This makes the recruitment process virtually impossible for startups like us.
