WellPoint is a massive health insurer, with over 34 million members, roughly 11% of the total U.S. population, though the company's membership will soon decline. During its 2011 fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Angela Braly said that it is stepping out of its business insuring senior citizens in California. Already, membership decreased by about 100,000 that quarter and will decline by about 600,000 in 2012. Wellpoint faces a difficult future. It missed analyst expectations in the fourth quarter last year as net income declined by 39% to $335 million. The company is also exposed, going forward, to volatility in the health insurance market. |
