Insider Hangouts At some resorts, the other guests are part of the draw.

(FORTUNE Small Business) – Sure, you work like mad. So when you get to a resort or spa, it's an effort just to make it to your massage on time. Networking among the locals doesn't top your list. Don't sweat it. Instead, tap into the scene by booking a resort that's also a private club. Lately, more hotels are opening clubs (read: charging high initiation fees and dues) to boost income. You get the bonus: By simply lounging poolside, you can dish with natives in the know. Here's our guide to four fertile hunting grounds.

In Napa Valley, Calif., winemakers converge on one spot. With white dormers, gabled roofs, and rocking chairs on wide pale-gray porches, Meadowood is a weekend home for 800 club members, most of whom are viticulturists. You could get into your rental car and head to a tasting where hired hands pour samples. Or you could hang at Meadowood (owned by Bill Harlan of the cult winery Harlan Estate) with the folks who actually get the first swallow. (800-458-8080)

Want a little Texas hospitality? At the Hotel Crescent Court in Dallas, you can sidle up to a Texas oil socialite at the hotel's private Crescent Club. The club's Rotisserie restaurant is a local power-lunch stop, and in the evenings the bar becomes a nightclub. (800-654-6541)

You might not qualify for a real Broadway chorus line, but you can do a little tap dance alongside one of New York City's rich or famous just blocks away, inside the Peninsula Hotel. The Peninsula Spa offers tap and yoga classes and a glass-enclosed rooftop pool. Take in the view, then head for the coffee and juice bar for a post-workout schmooze. (212-956-2888)

You probably don't need an incentive to visit the world-class golf courses and hotels overlooking the Pacific at Pebble Beach, Calif. But here's a nice fillip: local artists, writers, and celebs who tee up. Neighbor Clint Eastwood is rumored to sneak onto the greens. Make your day! Pebble Beach Resorts (800-654-9300) includes Casa Palmero and the Inn at Spanish Bay.
