Stock Gazing

(MONEY Magazine) – If the market has lately seemed as mysterious as the universe, the connection isn't new to artists Lise Autogena and Joshua Portway. "When the market was riding higher, there was this kind of omnipotence of the market," says Portway, explaining their collaboration, the Black Shoals Stock Market Planetarium. "We were interested in how it was beginning to be perceived as a separate domain." The installation, on display at the Tate Britain through June, is an eight-foot dome projected with what looks like the nighttime sky, only each star represents one of the 4,000 most actively traded companies. Live data feeds make for an ever-changing starscape: Trading volume determines a star's brightness, market cap sets its size, and companies with similar trading patterns form constellations.
