The Ultimate Toolbox Our guide to the 10 hand tools every homeowner needs
By Amy Wilson

(MONEY Magazine) – From shutting off the gas in an emergency (Crescent wrench) to hanging pictures (torpedo level), we narrowed it down to the essential hand tools. Pros and do-it-yourselfers will argue over the specifics (metal or wood? eight inch or 10?), but they'll agree that quality is key. Spend the money for the best, says Norm Abram of This Old House, and "you'll have a tool to last a lifetime." These are our favorites.

1. NINE-INCH TORPEDO LEVEL. A magnetic strip is a must. (Empire, $11.49)

2. TEN-INCH CRESCENT WRENCH. With jaws that can open to 1 5/16 inches, it can handle any nut that you'll encounter. (Crescent, $26.40)

3. SIX-INCH NEEDLENOSE PLIERS. It tackles everything from craft projects to home-wiring tasks. Look for one that can cut wire. (Klein, $26)

4. TWENTY-FIVE-FOOT MEASURING TAPE. The case should fit in your hand comfortably. (Stanley, $14.99)

5. RETRACTABLE UTILITY KNIFE. (Stanley, $7.99)

6. SIXTEEN-OUNCE CURVED-CLAW HAMMER. Metal, wood or fiberglass--buy for comfort, balance and a good grip. (Estwing, $28.82)

7. TWELVE-INCH COMBINATION SQUARE. A must for checking corners and marking cuts; metal versions are sturdiest. (Stanley, $8.99)

8. NINE-PIECE FOLD-OUT ALLEN WRENCH SET. Get two--one standard, one metric. (Husky, $5.97)

9. TEN-INCH CHANNELLOCK PLIERS. This adjustable tool works for a variety of plumbing chores. (Channellock, $17.43)

10. SIX-PACK SCREW-DRIVER SET. Size matters: Buy a set with three sizes each of Phillips-head and standard drivers. (Stanley, $19.99)

SUPPLIES Beyond the obvious (nails, screws, washers, sandpaper and carpenter's glue), for safety, add goggles and a pair of sturdy leather gloves. And there's the toolbox. Plastic is light and won't rust or dent. Get one with a removable tray. (Stanley, $19.99)

Note: All prices are suggested retail.
