eBaywatch: The Other Jet Blue
By Jonah Freedman

(MONEY Magazine) – If President Bush is looking for a way to pay down the federal deficit, maybe he should take a lesson from Mike Landa, an aircraft broker in Arlington, Wash. Landa auctioned via eBay a scrapped F/A-18A Hornet fighter jet (flown by the Navy's Blue Angels aerobatics team until it was taken out of service in 1994) for nearly $10 million. The winning bidder, whom Landa will identify only as a government contractor, will have to re-assemble the jet, currently in 11 pieces. This is believed to be the first time a fighter jet has been sold through eBay. (Landa is also auctioning two decommissioned Russian MiG-29s; starting price: $3.5 million apiece). Surely, the President can do the same with the 43 scrapped F-18s in military hands? --JONAH FREEDMAN
