447,000 baby carriers recalled

Blake Ellis, contributing writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Two government agencies announced the recall of 447,000 Dorel baby carriers Friday after the company received 77 hazard reports about the carrying handle coming off, resulting in at least three infant injuries.

"The problem with the unit is the carrying handle," said Rick Leckner, a spokesman for Dorel. "There's a bolt on either side and one can come loose. If the child is not harnessed in, the child can fall out."

Recalled: Dorel baby carriers

A joint statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that Dorel, a child products manufacturer, received 77 reports of the handle fully or partially falling off. At least three injuries to infants have been reported, including a head injury, bumps and bruises.

The carrier, which also functions as a car seat and as a stroller when purchased as a Travel Systems package, is only a risk when the handle is used. CPSC said the product can still be used as a car seat.

"There's nothing wrong with the seat," said Leckner. "Once it's set in the car there's absolutely no issue."

Brands that used the Dorel-manufactured carrier include Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Disney (DIS, Fortune 500). They were sold nationwide at department stores and other retail stores carrying products for children between January 2008 and December 2009 and cost between $120 and $220.

Consumers can contact Dorel Juvenile Group at (866) 762-3316 for a free repair kit. The kit includes bolts to secure the handle, Leckner said. To top of page
