With the Mustang, Ford pioneered the concept of the pony car -- a compact, stylish vehicle -- and drove off with America's heart. The automaker sold 1.5 million Mustangs in the two years after its 1965 introduction, prompting other carmakers to pounce on the pony car idea. The model's sales started to flag in the `80s and `90s, so Ford relaunched the Mustang in 2005 with advertising based on nostalgia for the original '65. To this day Mustang remains an important part of American automobile history.
