Osprey, based in Cortez, Colo., has sold mountaineering packs for 35 years. Its Cypher pack is made mostly of recycled materials such as ground-up plastic soda bottles. Mike Pfotenhauer, 53, started making custom backpacks in 1974, which he sold out of a Santa Cruz, Calif., sporting goods store. Today his company makes more than a dozen types of mountaineering and travel packs. Its new ReSource series - including the Cypher daypack - is made from more than 70% recycled material, including ground-up plastic soda bottles. ospreypacks.com
