Google acquisition:
Deja News (2001; undisclosed)
Yahoo acquisition:
eGroups (2000; $432 million in stock)
Winner: Tie
Google's first acquisition was the assets of Deja News, which archived the pre-web Usenet discussion network. Google added mailing-list management features and bundled the services as Google Groups, but Yahoo had a head start and used eGroups to jump-start Yahoo Groups. Still, as the principal archive of proto-Internet history, Google Groups is indispensable.
