By the time a woman hits 50, her bones are weakening, partly due to plunging estrogen levels. Half of women over 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis.
Women over 60 who weigh less than 154 pounds, smoke or have had at least one fracture are at higher risk.
The test to get:
All women at or near menopause (around age 50) should have a full bone scan. If your mother or a sister has osteoporosis, ask your doctor if you need one earlier.
