Fast and high: First 'Vette ZR1 sells for $1 million

Results from Barrett-Jackson's collector car auction include the first new Dodge Challenger, the first new Shelby GT500 KR and a giant car-eating robot dinosaur.

2008 Dodge Challenger
Sold for: $400,000

Another bidder at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson auction agreed to pay $400,000 (not including fees) for the right to buy the first 2008 Dodge Challenger off the production line this summer.

As with the Corvette ZR1, the winning bid was about 10 times the car's expected sticker price.

The production version of the Challenger will be unveiled in a few weeks at the Chicago Auto Show. The car on display at Barrett-Jackson was actually the concept version of the car. The first production cars built will all be the top-end SRT8 version, powered by a 6.1-liter 425-horsepower V8 engine.

Each car in the introductory run of SRT8 Challengers will have a dashboard plaque displaying its production number. The car sold in Scottsdale will bear the number "1."
