Cheap, simple and robust, Sync is even available on the Focus, Ford's recently redesigned subcompact that starts at about $14,000.
At a $400 option on the Focus, Sync really is impressive. Created in cooperation with Microsoft, it enables you to connect your cell phone and a variety of music players to your car and use them all with voice commands - with some limits.
Sync is available in more expensive Ford cars, too. But in the Focus, it really shows its value because no competitor in its class offers anything close. On its own, the Focus is a decent compact car, but the Sync system could put it over the top for some buyers.
Ford has exclusive rights to the underlying Microsoft software - called Microsoft Auto - only until the end of this year. After that, other car companies may start developing competing technologies. Meanwhile Ford is working fast to add new features and tools.
