Schedule: Next generation possibly delayed

The new Chevrolet Malibu was just introduced last year. It won the 2008 Car of the Year Award, the closest thing to an automotive Oscar, and it's been a huge sales success. That's a rare, and much needed thing for GM.

Car companies don't usually take a breather after a big hit, though. It takes a long time to develop a new car and the competition is fierce, so "next generation" models are always in the works.

With money tight, GM has decided to drag out development of the next generation Malibu, according to an unconfirmed report in the industry newspaper Automotive News. The report says its launch could be delayed to 2013 from 2012. In the meantime, the Malibu is doing well, so the damage should be minimal.
