Kasilof Fish Company's Smoked Sockeye Salmon
Founded by a commercial fisherman and an artist, the Maryville, Wa.-based Kasilof Fish Company offers cold-smoked trout, halibut and wild Alaskan salmon in fish-inspired gift boxes. The company's artistic packaging has featured paintings by cofounder Russ Lamb and work from other artists who use actual fish in their Gyotaku, a traditional form of Japanese fish printing.
Kasilof's most recent design is in three dimensions: a two-foot silver salmon-shaped box. All of the company's sockeye salmon comes from Alaska's Kasilof and Kenai rivers and is flavored overnight by Alder tree smoke. The fish is then vacuum packed and steamed, giving it a shelf life of at least five years.
