The brainchild of Detroit-born Gerald Wiegert, the Vector was a concept car first introduced in 1972 to compete with Lamborghini and Ferrari.
The Vector W2 came out in 1978, and the company claimed it could reach 230 mph. In 1989, the company, now called Vector Aeromotive, released the Vector V8, which got noticed when Andre Agassi ordered one for $455,000. But Vector had to return the tennis pro's money because the car didn't work properly.
Only 17 W8s were manufactured for public sale -- one of which appeared in the 1993 movie "Rising Sun."
Wiegert left that year when Indonesia-based MegaTech acquired a controlling interest . He went on to found the jet-ski company Aquajet, and recently has been working to revive Vector Motors with a new supercar.
