Solomon is one of the star graduates of BizDom U, a boot camp for would-be entrepreneurs started by Detroit mogul Dan Gilbert, chairman of Quicken Loans. Two years after graduating from Michigan State, Solomon and a partner won a $193,000 grant from Bizdom to start a company that trains people to work in the insurance industry.
Solomon said her company has improved the pass rate for those taking state qualifying examinations to sell insurance. "Because of the changes in health-care law," she says, "there are jobs right now for people who take our course and pass the test."
Solomon sees the services industry as a necessary element in the region's economic comeback: "Here in Detroit we've relied on the auto industry and manufacturing for too long.''
