This Chicago-based pharmaceutical company already works extensively in Haiti -- having donated $34 million in grants and products over the last three years. So when the earthquake hit, Abbott was able to offer up immediate medical supplies.
Abbott keeps emergency supplies like antibiotics, re-hydration solutions and nutritional supplements in hurricane-prone regions like the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast. About $500,000 worth of these packs were already in Haitian hospitals and clinics when the earthquake struck.
Also in place: satellite maps of where clinics, hospitals and other health resources in Haiti were located, thanks to an electronic mapping project the company had funded with Direct Relief International. After the quake, they shared these maps with the World Health Organization and other groups.
Abbott donated an additional $4.5 million in grants, medicine and other health-care products.
