Inspired by his sister, who works in Haitian schools, a technologist in the bank's trading department, Essien Leroy, decided to fly to Haiti just days after the earthquake.
In its Wall Street offices, Deutsche Bank literally passed a hat around to raise money for the trip. Leroy hitched a ride with Spanish-speaking broadcast network Televisa to assist in filming footage of the aftermath and distributed supplies his colleagues donated.
On a broader scale, Deutsche Bank raised $4 million by collecting a day's worth of equity trading commissions and donating it to the cause.
The investment bank also offered U.S. employees unlimited matching gifts to put toward Haiti relief. Employees gave $900,000.
