2010 profit: $1.2 billion
Amazon.com's profit crossed the billion-dollar mark for 2010, mostly generated from North American merchandise sales that grew 46% year over year. And while Apple may have had the most buzz-worthy gadget of the year with the iPad, Amazon sold 8 million-plus Kindle e-readers last year, according to some third-party estimates. The company, once just a humble online bookseller, could also be starting work on an Android tablet, according to some rumor mill websites.
