Edward W. Stack, Dick's Sporting Goods
It's no surprise that the CEO of this giant sporting goods retailer loves to compete. He played baseball and football in high school; now he runs and skis. But he's most accomplished on the golf course: his 4.8 handicap may make him the best golfer among Fortune 500 CEOs. He plays at western Pennsylvania clubs including Oakmont, Treesdale and Allegheny, as well as Florida's Medalist Golf Club.
Robert Eckert, Mattel
The toy company CEO was once an avid beach volleyball player, spending Sunday evenings on the shore of Lake Michigan, serving and bumping. His love of the sport came from watching his dentist father play twice weekly during lunch at the YMCA. Today, Eckert keeps fit by running, and playing golf, a game he picked up four years ago. "I am totally hooked, but not very good," he says. Home courses include Palos Verdes and Los Angeles country clubs.
Michael B. McCallister, Humana
McCallister has competed in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament for several years, winning the amateur division in 2006 with professional partner Arron Oberholser. Practice rounds at Kentucky's Lake Forest Country Club and Valhalla Golf Club have helped him achieve a low 6.4 handicap. --J.S.
