What I did after losing my job

Frustrated with their job searches these workers decided to stop looking for traditional jobs. Some retired, while others are reinventing themselves.

Beach-front living on early retirement

  • Name: Jeff Wadley
  • Age: 51
  • Industry: Information Technology

Jeff Wadley was forced to retire from IBM in 2012, after 26 years on the job. After years of job stress and a divorce, he decided "the only way I'd see 60" was to drop out of the labor force and live off his $250,000 in retirement savings. His only regret is that his New Jersey house was among those devastated by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Banks are hesitant to give him a loan to rebuild, so he may have to dip into his retirement. For now, he rents a condo near the New Jersey shore and doesn't regret retiring. He doesn't live large, and is thankful for what he has. "I'm not suffering."
