The nation's largest health insurer fell under the sharp glare of Andrew Cuomo last year - the New York Attorney General argued that a UnitedHealth subsidiary, Ingenix, had systematically shortchanged its New York State customers. UnitedHealth has agreed to transition an Ingenix data base to an independent university to run in the future.

It's hard to know how UnitedHealth will fare if the Obama administration ultimately imposes more healthcare regulation. But the company's nearly $5 billion in cash flow gives it the heft to consolidate its weaker rivals and stay on top. --Michael V. Copeland
