The 2005 merger of Kmart and Sears engineered by Eddie Lampert is still no winner. Same-store sales have dropped every year since the union. And the nation's third-largest retailer of general merchandise ranks rock bottom among its peers in terms of profits.

In 2009 Lampert invested heavily in Sears ecommerce business, launching websites and mobile apps as part a campaign called "ShopYourWay." These channels promote Sears' crown jewels -- company-owned brands like Kenmore, Craftsman and Lands' End. Meanwhile 60 Sears stores were closed last year. --J.S.
