Goldman Sachs got back to business as usual in 2009. It was the first of the former investment banks to post blowout results on gains in proprietary trading and its own investments.

But huge profits and bonuses drew outrage from taxpayers who had bailed out Goldman just months before. CEO Lloyd Blankfein didn't exactly help matters when he was quoted in a London newspaper saying the firm was doing "God's work."--S.C.
