United Technologies
Rank: 37 (Previous rank: 37)
CEO: Louis R. Chênevert
Compare tool: United Technologies vs. Top 10
Although its Otis elevator division is the company's most recognized brand, United Technologies owns some of the most innovative companies in the aerospace business.

Its Pratt & Whitney division supplies propulsion systems for military jets (including the F-35B Lightning) and commercial airliners. Hamilton Sundstrand has outfitted such jets as the new Boeing 787. And its Sikorsky unit manufactures the Black Hawk and Medevac helicopters.

UT chief Louis Chênevert plans to keep the innovations coming, investing $3.7 billion in research and development last year alone. And with its $40 billion-plus order backlog, it's no wonder the stock is up more than 70% in the past year. --P.N.
