Almost Family provides short-term at-home medical care in 11 states, with almost half of its 108 branches in Florida. Its 6,000-strong staff of caregivers includes nurses, occupational and speech therapists and home health aides.

Profits rose a staggering 223% from 2007 to 2009, driven mostly by Medicare reimbursements. But those payments have drawn scrutiny: This summer, the SEC opened an investigation into Almost Family's operations after the Wall Street Journal reported that companies in the sector were increasing the number of home visits not for medical reasons, but in order to cash in on a Medicare incentive. The company has stated that it is cooperating with the SEC inquiry.
