Summer on the Slopes
Take the snow out of a ski resort and what's left? Oh, just a four-star hotel that's dirt cheap.
(MONEY Magazine) – SURE, YOU CAN'T SKI DOWN A mountain in July, but you'll find huge savings and tons of activities at high-end alpine resorts this summer. • Fairmont's Chateau Whistler (fairmont.com) is as gorgeous in the summer as in the winter. Wildflowers replace snow on mountainside trails, and the thaw reveals a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones. The price is even more attractive: Rooms start at $175 a night, compared with $435 in winter. • Aspen's rep as an alpine den of luxury doesn't diminish when the temperatures rise. The same fancy boutiques (Gucci, Prada and others) on South Galena Street are still open--they're just selling sarongs instead of scarves. It's also a lot easier to snag a table at Matsuhisa Aspen (order the black cod), and the posh Hotel Jerome (hoteljerome.com) offers rooms at $225 a night, 65% less than in winter. • Smugglers' Notch (smuggs.com) in Vermont is like a summer camp, but for entire families. You can be off kayaking while the kids are on a nature hike. Two-bedroom condos run $2,728 a week. When the snow's falling? The fee would be $3,976. |
