More Cruise, Less Money
(MONEY Magazine) – EVERY FALL, cruise lines move their ships to warmer waters for the winter--and you can go along for the ride. These one-way repositioning, or "repo," cruises have unusual itineraries and more time at sea, giving passengers a chance to enjoy the ship's amenities. Best of all, they typically cost less than $100 a day (though you will have to buy two one-way plane tickets home). Check cruise line websites for their offerings, usually listed under Specials, or see if any of these voyages float your boat: • BOSTON TO CHARLESTON, S.C., OCT. 8-21 This 13-day Norwegian Cruise Lines trip takes a circuitous route from Massachusetts to South Carolina, via Bermuda, Antigua, Aruba and Florida. While at sea, enjoy the ship's six restaurants, 11 bars and two pools. Fares start at $60 per person per day vs. $70 normally. ncl.com • LISBON TO BARBADOS, NOV. 11-25 The luxurious Wind Star ships hold just 148 passengers, sail the Greek Islands all summer and move to the Caribbean in the fall. The standard seven-day trips run $3,000 or more, but this 14-day repo cruise is only $1,349 per person. windstarcruises.com • VENICE TO GALVESTON, OCT. 29-NOV. 15 On its way from Italy to Texas, Royal Caribbean's Splendour of the Seas stops in Croatia, Sicily, Spain, the Canary Islands, the Bahamas and the Florida Keys--an 18-day whirlwind tour for $1,569. That's $88 a day, compared with the usual $167. royalcaribbean.com NOTE: Prices are based on double occupancy. |
