Product or service: Independent record label signs politically and socially conscious hip-hop musicians from troubled neighborhoods.
Founded by musician Emmanuel Zunz (second from left), Verge Records intends to donate a portion of its proceeds to educational arts organizations working with at-risk young people through art and music. The label is betting on a healthy market in the U.S. for international hip-hop artists such as Brazilian rapper BNegao and his band. It plans to release its first CD next spring.
