In his prime, he dated Katherine Hepburn and was one of the world's richest men, taking over the family tool company as a teenager and turning it into an industrial colossus. He later branched out into movies and invested heavily in Las Vegas. But by the early 1950s, he was already showing signs of going off-kilter. You know the rest: the addictions, the long, long fingernails (cut once a year); the phobia about germs; the jars of urine; the constant loop of Ice Station Zebra. When he died, there were supposedly shards of hypodermic needles in his arms.
