Department stores are only as enticing as the impresarios behind them, and Burt Tansky of Neiman Marcus (left) and Jeffrey Kalinsky of Nordstrom (right) are two of the best. Tansky, who rose through the ranks at Filene's and I. Magnin, now leads $4.4 billion Neiman Marcus Group (which also owns Bergdorf Goodman). Kalinsky's was a less traditional route: Nordstrom acquired a majority stake in his cutting-edge Jeffrey boutiques two years ago and has since named him Director of Designer Merchandising.
