Like PNC Financial and Pulte Homes, home furnisher Leggett & Platt is a singular success in an industry that's been hammered by the credit crunch. Leggett, which builds support systems for mattresses, beds, and chairs, is an indirect supplier to some of the hardest-hit sectors - home and office builders. But the Carthage, Mo.-based company has boosted shareholder confidence by maintaining its guidance for the year and sawing off unprofitable arms.
