Dial-a-Mattress
Dial-a-Mattress
Long Island City, N.Y.

Status: Filed for Chapter 11 in March; planning a sale, possibly to rival Sleepy's.
Revenue: $100 million
Debt: Not available

Summary: No overleverage here for the mattress-via-phone pioneer - just a simple case of consumers backing off from big-ticket items, even a good night's sleep. Other mattress companies are having trouble too: Maryland's Mattress Discounters filed for bankruptcy last year and Foamex, which makes foam bedding products, filed for Chapter 11 in February. Dial-a-Mattress sales in 2008 were down from $170 million just two years ago.
