Pilgrim's Pride
Pilgrim's Pride
Pittsburg, Texas

Status: Filed for Chapter 11 last December; now restructuring and refinancing its debt.
Revenue: $8.5 billion
Debt: $3.1 billion

Summary: One of the world's largest chicken companies, Pilgrim's Pride lost about $1 billion last year, compared with a profit of $47 million the year before. It's suffering from a poultry producer's perfect storm: high grain prices, lower demand as consumers cut back on meat consumption, too much chicken supply, which is lowering prices, and debt left over from its recent acquisition of its Atlanta-based poultry producer Gold Kist.
