As you can see in the picture above, this 2012 Porsche 911 is traveling at 91 kilometers per hour -- about 56 miles per hour -- but the engine is humming along at idle.
The new 911's automatic transmission completely disconnects the wheels from the engine when coasting down the highway, reducing friction. It's like pushing in the clutch while driving a stick shift.
"Failling to idle realizes a good amount of fuel savings," said Porsche's Schiltd
Also, like a hybrid car, the new 911's engine can shut off automatically whenever the car stops, restarting as soon as the driver's foot releases the brake pedal.
Both of those features can be turned off by the driver but Porsche engineers hope, if they did their jobs right, you won't feel the need to because the action will be smooth and seamless.
