Doing business is a relative breeze in Australia's largest metropolitan center. Sydney ranks best in the study for ease of starting a new business. Australia was second only to New Zealand in a recent World Bank ranking of entrepreneurial economies.

Sydney also scores well for its ease of hiring and firing, adding to its appeal as Australia's economic hub. A number of economic development organizations are working to attract new businesses to Sydney, and the port city of 4.6 million people has had some success in drawing high-tech industries, said Pond of the Partnership for New York City.

The cost of living in Sydney is quite high, but so are overall incomes and domestic purchasing power.
