Rice Business Plan Competition: The winners

Here's a look at the judges' favorites, and who took home what.

1. NuMat Technologies
$874,300
Northwestern University

The team has created ultraporous crystalline materials that it thinks could change the way we store gases. NuMat uses proprietary algorithms to find and make materials that soak up gas like a sponge, allowing for low-pressure storage. For example, natural gas in cars could be stored at one-fifth the pressure.

Note: Total winnings may include prizes from individual backers that don't factor into overall rankings in the competition.
