Evidenced by the bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler, 2008 was a painful year to be selling cars. Daimler's earnings fell by 64% as sales plunged in Europe and the U.S. -- a key market for Daimler's Mercedes-Benz division. Its focus on higher-priced cars -- Daimler is the world's No. 2 luxury carmaker behind BMW -- didn't make things easier during the recession.

CEO Dieter Zetsche this year detailed plans to save billions by cutting production and using the same parts across many of its cars. But as the global recession drags on, analysts are not asking if Daimler will lose money this year, but how much.
