The oil industry, faced with a barrage of criticism amid record oil and gasoline prices, recently said Americans' knowledge of energy fundamentals is lacking.

To back that up, the American Petroleum Institute, an industry organization, released a study showing most Americans did not know from where the country gets its oil, overestimated the size of U.S. oil companies, and perhaps took a brighter view of renewable energy than warranted.
