The third-largest office supply retailer has tried hard to play catch-up with Office Depot and industry leader, Staples, making impressive stock gains in 2006. Although retail sales actually shrunk over 2 percent on the year, the company made up for it with stronger business on its contract side.OfficeMax put more private-label products on its store shelves, helping to substantially boost profit margins. But the company is likely to face intense competition from its larger rivals in coming years, says Morningstar analyst Anthony Chukumba.
