The faltering U.S. mortgage market hit the British global banking behemoth hard, costing it $725 million in pretax profits in 2006. Its total net income grew just 4.7%, to $15.8 billion, compared with 34.1% increase in 2005. But subsidiaries in two developing markets, Mexico and the Middle East, each added $1 billion to the bottom line.
