This September, IBM announced plans to collaborate with Metropolitan Community College in Omaha to create the first green data management degree.
Enrolled students will learn how to design and manage energy-efficient data centers, says Mark Hanny, vice president of Alliances and head of IBM's Academic Initiative. As part of the initiative, IBM donates courseware and software to about 3,000 schools, including 60 community colleges.
"It's in our best interest to have customers with a skilled workforce," says Hanny. The company targeted Omaha because it's "at the perfect intersection of the fiber optic network that goes through our country," he says. "It's attracted a large number of information service companies with data centers, like Google."
