New Yorkers can take classes in the "Science of Sustainable Building" or "Geoexchange Design Principles" at the Center for Sustainable Energy, a program created in 2003 at Bronx Community College.
The Center is based in the Bronx, but offers classes at various city community colleges. Executive Director Tria Case says the program has received assistance from companies like GE and Johnson Controls.
According to Case, students range from aspiring solar installers and building auditors to contractors looking to upgrade their skills. "We're also getting a lot of entrepreneurs," she says. "Quite a few have started their own photovoltaic and solar companies throughout the metro area."
