Yamaha makes ATVs, snowmobiles, boats, outboard motors, personal watercraft -- and motorcycles. In 1955, it used its research into metal alloys for acoustic pianos to make motorcycle frames.
Its first motorized product was a 125cc machine patterned after an old Harley model. By 1970, it had moved up to 650cc with its first four-stroke engine, and then to 1300cc in 1996.
The top-of-the-line 2011 FJR 1300 super-sport tourer, carries a price tag of $15,490. It boasts an advanced air management system and adjustable bodywork that "keeps the FJR rider looking and feeling cool," according to a company sales document.
The music hasn't stopped. Yamaha continues to flaunt its instrument-making heritage by sporting a logo that depicts three interlocking tuning forks.
