What do you look for first?
I usually go right for the cover letter, because résumés are all very similar. I look for a candidate to engage me and to really get a glimpse of who that person is. What do they know about us as an organization? Can they clearly define how their values and their skill set match up to what we offer as an organization?
How should job seekers prepare?
First and foremost: Really know that organization. Go in very knowledgeable about the products and services it offers. And for me, more importantly, what are its values? What does that company take pride in? [Then] relate how their values match with the values of the organization.
What should applicants avoid?
It's like pulling teeth sometimes to get people to expand on an answer. I don't want "yes" and "no." We're looking for people to go into detail about what they think and feel. --Interview with Lynn Franklyn, HR manager
